Located in Edina, MN, this remodeling project addressed repairing and
refining an earlier remodel to this 1950’s contemporary
residence. The majority of the remodel was focused on two areas-
refining and improving circulation, and improving the kitchen/family
spaces. The circulation was distilled to one open-riser stair up to the
second level, with a unique vertical cable rail system. This allowed
views to open up between the living spaces and the lake. The family
space was improved by adding a small dinette off the kitchen space,
which opened up the existing form to reorient the kitchen. This
improved the view, flow and focus between the lake on the west side and
the pool on the east.
The kitchen is composed of cumaru ‘Z’-shaped folded planes that allow
the rift oak cabinets to exist as separate sculptural elements. Kitchen
circulation was designed to accomodate entertainment both at the pool
side and the formal dining side. The warm wood tones carry through to
the family room cabinetry and the open stair treads, tying the
‘touched’ elements through the house.
