The inspiration for this design came from considering mobile
architecture, and a study of successful examples of expanding space. As
the specifics of the TOGS competition folded into that study, an
intriguing direction separated itself - that of the carnival ride.
Portable, expandable and just plain fun, adapting the carnival ride
brings a new perspective on the small space gallery. The gallery
is no longer contained within the relatively small constraints of the
program, but rather expands well beyond its boundaries. The sense of
‘play’ is inherent within the design and is ideally suited to an
outdoor art festival.
The resulting design is a new way to view outdoor art. Dynamic,
engaging, and participatory, this design moves from a static,
single-point view to one that draws the audience into the experience.
It is one that embraces the spirit of a carnival, while providing
effective and flexible display space.
